Welcome Howard Shearer, Sr.
1913-2006

Welcome Howard Shearer Sr., one of only three men to captain both the football and basketball teams at the University of Florida, who went on to spend 30-plus years as a coach, teacher and high school administrator in Jacksonville, died Tuesday. He was 92.

Mr. Shearer died at a hospice in Williamsburg, Va., where he had lived for the past two years. The funeral will be private.

went to be with his Lord on July 6, 2013 in Jacksonville, FL. He was born November 14, 1915 in Gold Hill, NC. Donald spent his childhood in Baden, NC and Maryville, TN and moved to Jacksonville in 1940. He married Sally McLendon on July 31, 1942 and was a member of the Southside Baptist Church for 60 years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts, Maryville College in 1937 and a Masters at the University of Florida in 1952. Donald served in the U.S. Navy for six years and was in WWII from 1940-1945 where he was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Commander. He did play professional baseball before and after WWII and managed teams in the New York Giants and Cleveland Indians minor league system. Donald was also a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal in the Duval county school system for 30 years at Jackson High School, Paxon High School and John Gorrie Jr. High School. He was an avid golfer and also a member of the Woodstock Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Sally, two sons Donald Jr., Lake Mary, FL, Christopher, Ft. Myers, FL, 7 grandchildren Dana Wolfe, Advance, NC, Candace Vandegrift, San Diego, CA, Robin DeMasi, Gainesville, FL, Jeff Cross, Boston, MA, Isabelle, Jackson and Porter Cross, Lake Mary, FL, 7 great-grandchildren Colton Story, Coronado, CA, Madelyn and Nicholas DeMasi, Gainesville, FL, Lillian and Jared Wolfe, Advance, NC, Morgan and Kyle Cross, Cape Coral, FL. Arrangements under the care of Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. passed away Monday, March 26, 2012.

He was 80 years old. Russell was an active member of Moose Lodge 2134 since 1984. He graduated from Florida State University with a major in music. After a tour of duty in the US Army, he returned to school and obtained a master s degree in music. He taught music for 30 years, mostly at Paxon Junior High. His band students received numerous competition awards. His hobby was flying and he held a private license for small aircraft. Russell is survived by his brother Dale and his nieces, Susan and Sharon. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 31 at 4:00PM in the chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave.

Entered into eternal rest Wednesday, December 22, 2010. A musician and teacher in the Jacksonville area for nearly 40 years, Mr."P", as he was affectionately known, directed orchestras at Paxon and Sandalwood high schools. He was beloved by students and faculty alike and multiple times Teacher of the Year. Don was active in the music community as a cellist in the Jacksonville Symphony and Starlight Symphonette. He was a lifetime member of the Musicians' Association of Jacksonville and performed with notable artists including Tony Bennett, Victor Borge, Count Basie, Liberace, John Denver and many others. He was director of the Jacksonville Youth Symphony and for over 20 years Orchestra Director of Duval Public School's Summer Musical held at the Civic Auditorium. He earned his Bachelor of Music from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA and Master of Music at Northwestern University. Early organization credits include the Quad-Cities Symphony and Mobile Symphony. He retired in 1991 to enjoy the quiet life along the banks of the St. Johns River. He is survived by his sons, Don and Tim Papenbrock; his sons' mother, Liz Papenbrock; and grandsons, Maddison and Mason Papenbrock. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 in the San Juan del Rio Catholic Church, 1714-3 State Rd 13, Saint Johns, FL 32259. JOHNSON Ruby S. Johnson, 97 years old went to be with our Lord February 28, 2010. She will be missed. Ruby was a lifelong educator. She taught elementary school and was a principal of Annie Morgan School in Jacksonville, Florida from 1945 - 1971. She then went to Brunswick, Georgia and taught another ten years in elementary education before retiring.

BRIDGES Danny Rogers Bridges, Sr. passed away January 16, 2007, at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was born in Valdese, NC, on March 6, 1938, to Fletcher and Mary Alice Bridges.

Sports were the love of his life from the time he was a small child. In the fall of 1962, he moved to Jacksonville, where his career included teaching high school science and history,and coaching footballand basketball at Paxon Senior High. In 1965, his basketball team won the State Championship and he was named the Coach of the Year.

James Allen Jack Jones, 91, died peacefully Saturday, May 3, 2014 in the loving arms of his devoted wife of sixty-four years. Jack worked for the Duval County School Board for 30 years as a teacher, coach and principal. He was a member of the Murray Hill United Methodist Church since 1953 and served in many capacities. Jack served in the army during WWI He was born in New Lacy Georgia on February 13, 1923, to Charles Franklin Jones and Mabel Smith. He was preceded in death by his 5 siblings and his only son, David Allen Jones. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Juanita Burford Jones: two daughters, Teresa (Nixon) Chason and Jacquelyn (Brendon) Dillon: 5 grandsons, Michael Jones, Patrick Dillon, James Dillon, Tyler Dillon, Nicholas Chason and 3 great-grandchildren, Devin, Darian, and Illyssa. FOSTER James B. Jr. Foster, 88, went to be with the Lord on November 27, 2016. A Jacksonville native, Jim served as a teacher, coach and administrator for 38 years in the Duval County School System. He retired in 1996 from Fletcher High School. Jim's commitment to Jesus Christ focused on leading church choirs for many years, including 28 years at Good News Baptist. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, of 43 years; two nieces, Tara Peterson (Sean) and Erika Stroup (Billy) and their two children, Samantha and Tyler. Jim will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery.
